STEP 1: Ideation

The initial spark can come anywhere. Typically one band member or the composer will come up with a starting point which is typically a guitar riff or a musical piece on the Keyboards or the Piano. It is best to have all band members participate in the ideation stage so that the band is truly greater than the sum of the parts. However typically in many bands there is one person who is the creative director of the entire show.

As an individual composer your initial spark can come from many sources including the songs and musical genres that you are currently listening. This is not the same as being “inspired” or illegally ripping off someone’s musical work. However keep listening to new genres of music to have an open mind and greater exposure.

STEP 2: Background Arrangement

Once you have an initial starting point you will need to arrange other pieces of music around the initial riff. Say for example you have a killer guitar riff (Say a progression of chords) you may want to start the song with it or use it as the verse or chorus or main melody.

The other pieced of music will act to support the rest of the song. For example if you use your initial riff in the chorus you may want to use a lighter version (say an arpeggio version) of the progression or some complementary riff for the verse. Other derived musical pieces could become the bridge or the intro to the song.

Once you have figured out the pieces of music you will have to arrange the entire background of the song from the start to the finish as you want it.

Arranging is mostly done on computers using a very powerful computers say for example a machine with a 4/8 Core Intel/Mac processor. Various software like Logic can be used for arrangements. However if you are recording demo versions at home this can be done on much less powerful machines… even of your laptop!

STEP 3: Recording

Now as a composer or a band you need to bring in other instruments and/or vocals and record them separately.

For example you feel your composition could use a sitar solo in between or a Carnatic vocalist for backing vocals. (This is the stage to let your imagination soar!) The possibilities are limitless.

Once the lead parts of the song are recorded we can move on to the next part.

STEP 4: Music Production:

At this stage you may still want to nail a particular feel and add more instruments and effects. You may add or edit certain effects to the various musical parts you have recorded so far. The amount of processing you can do for each of the tracks you have recorded is again endless.

A word of caution: There is a point of time whereby you will not achieve much by spending sleepless nights tweaking some process into the tracks. Just be aware when to move on to the next stage! There are bands and composers who spend forever trapped in production! Just see where you draw the line between perfectionism and paranoia.

STEP 5: Mixing

This is where you give everything you have produced so far to a mix engineer and give him a basic idea of what you want to achieve in terms of the sound. The Mix Engineer will thereafter mix the song and give it the correct treatment. A mix engineer’s tool is of course the multiple Channel Mixer. In a typical professional setting it could be a 24 channel mixer with the ability to process any number of tracks.

STEP 6: Mastering

Once you are through with each of the above 5 Steps for each song that you want on your album you are ready to move into the penultimate step which is Mastering the Album.

The tracks which are produced so far are sent to a Mastering Facility where the final EQ adjustment including equalizing the loudness of all the tracks takes place. The tools for this purpose used are Mastering Boxes.

STEP 7: Replication

The Mastered Tracks that are so produced are then finally sent to (hopefully!) your label company for final replication and distribution into hopefully millions of CDs.

Of course now that you album is ready for distribution you will have to make a huge effort to promote the album. That would require a lot many steps and in case you are an independent artist without the backing of a Music Label these initial steps are going to be a very difficult. Yet there is no need to lose hope if you are a band or composer who has found his sound the audience is out there. Make the effort and reach out to your audience. In my opinion, both the drums and acoustic piano samples that technology can produce today sound very good and are viable enough to be used to replace less than desired sound sources in professional recordings. There are even freeware VST (Virtual Studio Technology, a virtual instrument format) that provide sampled drums, pianos and other instruments for free download. The quality of the sampling is of course linear to the price of the product in question (the best sounding samples are often the most expensive ones – they are because of a reason).

How Do I Use Sampling?

Knowing that in computer-based music production the use of real instruments can be replaced with the use of virtual instruments, sampling plays an important role for the aspiring and even professional music producer. Travelling (especially flying) with photography gear can be a problem. What should you take? If you’re going on the trip of a lifetime you want to capture those precious shots – you may never get to go there again. Here are my tips from experience:

1. What to Take…

What will you be seeing? What type of trip is it? Wildlife? Landscapes? Macro? Low light situations? Think through the types of shot you are likely to want and choose your gear accordingly. An example of the gear I picked is shown later in this article. What you might need depends on your priorities… and strength! Whatever happens I recommend that you take more than one camera…an extra system allows for fast snatched shots and alternative angles without the need to change the lens.

2. Security

Remember when you’re deciding what to take, that you need to think about how to keep it all safe as well. Choose accommodation carefully or carry your gear with you (is there a room safe or other safekeeping method?) Always insure your gear with a reputable Company and check what you are covered for – “all risks” is best. It can take a long time and a lot of cash to get together your perfect photography kit – and it can be devastating to lose it.

3. Getting Your Photography Gear on the Aircraft.

Substitute your carry-on bag for a good protective photo gear backpack.Organise the interior using adjustable interior dividers (always provided with good photography bags). Pack in an organised way so that you can re-pack easily if you are checked going through to the departure lounge.

Planning is key to make sure your travelling is as hassle free as possible. Check the airlines and pick carefully to get the most out of your carry on allowance (this can vary widely). You don’t want to get to the airport only to be confronted by a refusal to accept your oversize, over weight bag. If you travel with a partner you can share out the weight a bit… unless they are a photo nut as well!

Another thing to remember is to take into account all the stages of your journey. On our trip of a lifetime from London to New Zealand we flew in a 747 from Heathrow to Auckland, but then transferred to a tiny 12 seater for the next stage of our journey. On this tiny aircraft out cabin allowance was a lot less than for the jumbo. If you get this wrong, you’ll have to check some of your gear into the hold, leaving it at the mercy of baggage handling systems (NOT recommended). This happened to me on a European trip and I ended up with a broken camera and rejected insurance claim (putting camera gear in the hold in a normal suitcase is not “reasonable care” according to insurers).

4. Take Tried and Trusted Equipment

Never never buy photography equipment at the airport. It’s extremely rare to get cheap deals at airports and you really don’t know what you’re getting. Once you’ve flown to your destination you’re stuck with whatever you bought. This tip goes for buying kit especially for a trip as well – ALWAYS practice and use the gear well before you go away. You will get better shots if you know your gear and it’s capabilities, whether strengths or weaknesses. Also… there’s nothing worse than buying an expensive lens just before going on a trip, then finding when you get there that it is faulty! You then have to carry it around as dead weight and miss out on a massive amount of shooting opportunities as well!…Yes that’s from bitter experience.

5. Clothing

Yes, you did read that right… When you are on a photography trip it pays to wear the right gear. For instance: a polo might be more suitable than a t shirt to prevent chafing from camera straps. A sleeveless jerkin with lots of pockets is incredible useful. Shorts or pants that will dry easily and which don’t impede free movement are a good choice and dont forget hat and sunscreen. If you are carrying a lot of kit you will need the support offered by a good pair of supportive walking shoes or boots – even on city streets this can make the difference and prevent tired, aching feet. Obviously the gear you need depends on climatic conditions, but add your photography needs to that to arrive at the best solutions.
